Philological Encounters

Philological Encounters

The journal Philological Encounters (PHEN) is dedicated to a historical and philosophical critique of philology and promotes, in line with the research program Zukunftsphilologie, critical and comparative perspectives with the aim of integrating textual scholarship and the study of language from across the world. PHEN takes as its point of departure the growing concern with the global significance of philology and its potential. By taking a historically conscious and critical approach, exclusivist notions of the self and and the canon are challenged - beyond disciplinary, geographical or temporal boundaries. You will find all issues of the journal here. The journal was launched as an initiative of Zukunftsphilologie  in 2016.

Contribute
Philological Encounters welcomes innovative and critical contributions in the form of articles as well as review articles of usually two to three related books, preferably from different disciplines. It is open to contributions from all disciplines studying the history of textual practices, hermeneutics, philology, philological controversies, or the global history of writing, archiving, tradition-making and publishing. Please check our instructions for authors before submitting your article via the journal’s editorial manager. We are looking forward to receiving your contribution. A more detailed overview of the submission process can be found on the journal's webpage.

Philological Encounters Monographs

Alongside four issues a year, PHEN occasionally publishes monographs or collected volumes as supplements to the journal in the book series Philological Encounters Monographs. In 2019, Hebrew Literature and the 1948 War: Essays of Philology and Responsibility by Hannan Hever (Yale University) was published. Thanks to the generous support of the Committee on Southern Asian Studies and the Humanities Visiting Committee (both of the University of Chicago), the first publication in the series, Whitney Cox’s Modes of Philology in Medieval South India, published in 2016, is an open-access publication.
